The list was found amongst the paperwork after the funeral. One item made Elara laugh out loud: "Learn to tap dance." She imagined her stern, practical mother, shuffling and clicking her heels. A genuine giggle escaped her.

She signed up for a beginner's tap class, her feet itching with a strange excitement. The instructor, a vibrant woman with a booming laugh, greeted her warmly. “Welcome! We're all here to have fun and make some noise.” Elara felt a surprising surge of ease.

After class, she visited a local animal shelter. Her mother had always loved animals, specifically dogs. She’d promised herself she'd adopt a dog, in honor of her mother. She walked down the rows of cages, talking softly to each hopeful face, eventually finding herself drawn to a sweet-faced terrier mix. She filled out the application and waited, feeling a lightness she hadn't experienced in weeks.
