Gemotions

The eviction notice was taped to Mrs. Rodriguez's door. The woman always had a smile for everyone, but times had obviously been difficult. The other neighbors murmured, then looked away. Michael, however, felt a tightness in his chest.

He knew that across the street lived a woman, Ms. Dubois, who rarely left her elegant townhouse. Rumor had it she was loaded. Michael had always been intimidated by her. He gathered his courage, and went to see her.

He told her about Mrs. Rodriguez. Ms. Dubois listened, her expression unreadable. The next day, Michael saw a moving van. The following week, he saw a smiling Mrs. Rodriguez and Ms. Dubois chatting over coffee in the local cafe. Ms. Dubois gave him a small wave.
