Rain lashed against the windows of Liam’s tiny studio apartment. The condo conversion notice felt particularly bleak under the fluorescent kitchen light. He considered his options. The rent-controlled building was a haven.

He spotted Mrs. Rodriguez, his downstairs neighbor, struggling with her groceries in the downpour. Without a second thought, Liam hurried outside, umbrella in hand.

He offered to carry her bags, the weight surprisingly substantial. Her grateful smile as they entered the lobby felt weightless. He helped her with the lock, then gently placed the groceries on her counter, and listened while she worried about her finances.
