The office was a sterile expanse of beige, and Amelia felt as though she’d been permanently merged with her chair. The fluorescent lights hummed, adding to the general sense of… stagnation. A thick packet lay on her desk, tied with a ribbon. Her biography. Apparently, someone had decided her life was worthy of documentation. Amelia felt a surge of resentment, but the feeling quickly dissipated. It was just too much effort to react.

She stared at the packet, its contents a mystery. Years of interviews. Meetings. The sheer amount of time that must have gone into it felt overwhelming. She pushed it aside, reaching for her untouched coffee. Tomorrow, she thought. Tomorrow, she would consider the contents. Right now, the idea of doing anything at all was incredibly unappealing.
