"Well, that's that," Leo sighed, staring at the screen. The reality of the situation hadn't truly sunk in. He'd anticipated this, logically, intellectually. But the emotional impact, the sheer physical feeling of it… that was something else. He felt a profound sense of… heaviness.

He stretched his legs out on the floor and slumped back against his chair. The afternoon outside his dorm room window looked impossibly bright and active. He imagined the other students, busily engaged in their projects. He imagined what he was supposed to be doing. He closed his eyes, and instead, focused on the dull ache in his shoulder.
