“Great,” said Esme, staring at the denial email. It wasn't exactly a surprise, but the reality still stung. She remained at her computer desk, not moving. Her body felt stuck in place, as if her muscles were too tired to work. A vast expanse of nothingness opened up before her.

She stared out of the window, seeing nothing of interest. She thought about the mountain of work she had to do, the assignments, the extracurriculars, the future. She let the thought pass. She had hours. She leaned back in her chair. Maybe later.
