The airline employee’s apologies were like a droning lullaby. Kevin slumped in his seat, the news of the delay hitting him with a peculiar sense of calm. The awards ceremony was tonight. His colleagues and family were expecting him. He had practiced his speech, but the thought of all the effort involved in attending... he felt a sort of blankness.

He stared at his hands, watching them lay still in his lap. He thought he should probably check on the status of his luggage, but the idea of moving felt like a feat.

His phone buzzed with an incoming text. A colleague. Asking if he was on his way. He ignored it. Maybe he could just... not go.
