The fluorescent lights of the accounting department hummed, a sound that usually lulled Arthur into a productive stupor. Now, in the sterile new environment of the sales team, they just grated. He slumped in his ergonomic chair, the pristine white walls of his new cubicle mocking him. The mountain of spreadsheets he'd been assigned looked less like a challenge and more like a physical impediment.

A bead of sweat trickled down his temple, even though the air conditioning was cranked. He propped his chin on his fist, letting his gaze drift towards the window. Outside, the midday sun blazed. He imagined the park across the street, filled with people enjoying their lunch breaks.

"Arthur! You haven't even touched the Q3 projections, have you?" His new supervisor, Brenda, a woman perpetually radiating brisk efficiency, stood over him.

He sighed, a sound Brenda clearly didn't miss. "Just…getting acquainted," he mumbled, avoiding her gaze. "Familiarizing myself with the…terrain."
