The air in the office was stale, thick with the scent of recycled air. Jessica was meant to be working on the quarterly reports, but the numbers swam before her eyes. It was a struggle to stay awake.

During lunch, she overheard a discussion between two junior colleagues about their salaries. The numbers hung in the air, a constant reminder of her own perceived failure. The news had left her feeling like her limbs were made of lead. The reports could wait. Everything could wait.

She spent the afternoon staring out the window, the sun glinting off the buildings across the street. She felt a deep sense of weariness, a longing for something… anything… other than the mountain of paperwork on her desk.
