The constant clicking of keyboards in the open-plan office seemed to mock Robert's inaction. He sat hunched over his desk, his back aching. He had promised himself he would catch up on emails, but the screen swam before him.

A casual comment in a team meeting about salary structures had revealed a bitter truth. His junior colleague, fresh out of college, was earning more than he was. He was an emotional wreck. He felt a profound sense of exhaustion.
