The curtains remained drawn, the room shrouded in a perpetual twilight. The world outside, with its demands and expectations, seemed far away and utterly unappealing. He stretched, a slow, deliberate movement that felt more like a chore than a pleasure.

The metallic snap of the mailbox signaled another intrusion on his self-imposed isolation. He considered ignoring it, pretending he hadn't heard. The thought of the effort, the brief exposure to the elements… was too much.

Finally, driven by the nagging discomfort of unanswered responsibilities, he rose. Among the bills and coupons, a brightly colored card with a generic "Happy Birthday" greeting, no signature. He placed it back on the counter, next to the pile of to-do lists he hadn't even looked at.
