The alarm shrieked. David slapped the snooze button, the harsh noise vibrating through him, making him want to burrow deeper. Brunch with Emily. He knew the brunch place; crowded, noisy. The thought of eggs Benedict felt more like a chore than a treat. He considered sending a message.

He finally conceded, dragging himself from the bed. He dressed, mechanically. The drive to the restaurant felt interminable.

There, at the table, sat Emily. And, across from her, a woman he’d met the other night, arms crossed, face a thundercloud. He approached the table slowly, dread coalescing in his chest.
