The dorm room smelled like stale pizza and unfulfilled ambition. Sarah, sprawled across her unmade bed, gazed at the ceiling, a vast expanse of uninteresting white. The email, perched on her laptop screen, held a message she didn't want to digest: "Scholarship Review." It read more like a threat.

She let out a long sigh, the air escaping her lungs with a slow, deliberate quality. The money had enabled her to attend the university; to attend and do… next to nothing.
