The silence of the apartment felt oppressive, a heavy blanket smothering any desire for activity. The idea of the sun, and the day outside, was enough to make Kevin's stomach churn. His roommate, Michael, was practically bouncing off the walls with enthusiasm for a guinea pig.

"We could name him Captain Snuggles!" Michael had said, his eyes practically sparkling. Kevin closed his own eyes, imagining the work, the effort, and the constant need to care for another being. The idea of even getting out of bed felt like an extraordinary exertion.

“Maybe later,” Kevin finally managed to say, his voice strained. He pulled the covers further over his head.
