The thought of the upcoming day was enough to bring on a wave of… well, a feeling. An inexplicable desire to stay put. Even the sound of a simple conversation was grating, so the prospect of a pet was completely overwhelming. Her roommate, Emily, was practically squealing with excitement about adopting a hedgehog.

"They're so adorable! And they're nocturnal, so we wouldn't even have to see them that much!" Emily had declared that morning. Sarah, whose entire body felt like it was made of lead, simply stared at the ceiling. The idea of needles, of food, and the potential for any disruption of her current state felt too great.

“We’ll see,” Sarah said, her voice a near monotone, as she nestled deeper into the covers, seeking the solace of another hour of immobility.
