"Ugh," David muttered, the sound barely audible above the rhythmic tap of his fingers against his desk. He hadn’t even bothered to shave this morning, and the stubble scratched at his jawline. He was supposed to be working on a presentation, but the presentation template remained untouched, a white void mocking his inertia. He just wanted to lean back, close his eyes, and drift.

His stomach gave a low rumble. He should probably get something to eat. His gaze fell upon the half-eaten bag of chips beside his keyboard. The salty temptation was strong. Suddenly, an email notification blinked into existence. It was from HR.

The headline was serious. "Significant Changes Ahead for [Company Name]." He clicked on it with a sigh. It was a long message, full of jargon and corporate-speak. He skimmed it, his eyes glazing over. “Restructuring… synergies… value proposition…” Then he saw the words "merger and acquisition."
