The clanging halt of the elevator delivered a thud to Sam’s heart. He was not thrilled with the idea of anything requiring exertion, let alone an emergency situation.

Across the tiny enclosure, his colleague, Peter, was already attempting to pry open the doors. Sam simply watched, feeling a deep seated sense of reluctance towards any unnecessary movement.

He leaned back against the wall, the cold metal a welcome comfort. He crossed his arms, the action a sign of deep resistance. He just wanted to be done with the day.

The thought of talking, of explaining anything, was deeply unpleasant. Three hours felt like an insurmountable obstacle to his goal.
