The eviction notice was strategically placed under a takeout container. He’d meant to throw it away, he had, but the effort required was too much. The thought of folding the cardboard and taking a walk seemed exhausting. The container, at least, offered a degree of visual separation from the threat.

He lay still in the morning's light, his eyes tracing the patterns on the ceiling. He felt as if gravity had increased tenfold. He needed to get up, shower, go outside, and fix the situation, but his limbs wouldn’t cooperate. They seemed to be sewn to the mattress.

His phone buzzed. He ignored it.
