The hum of the refrigerator was a dull, constant drone, a fitting soundtrack to the morning. Sarah lay curled on the sofa, the blanket drawn up to her chin. The television blared, but she paid no attention. She knew she should turn it off, but the effort seemed too much.

She had to see her new therapist, the woman she found out was her childhood tormentor, Emily Carter. She thought of the words she needed to speak, the things she had to face. The mere thought of it was exhausting.

The sun, a fiery ball of annoyance, streamed through the window, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. Sarah sighed, her shoulders slumping.
