The spreadsheet stared back, a matrix of empty cells. The task – creating a budget for a new initiative – felt like a weight around her neck. She sighed, a small sound of resignation. The idea of poring over figures and projections was something she would do anything to avoid.

She had spent most of the morning staring at the ceiling, waiting for inspiration to strike. She had looked out the window. She had reorganized the pens on her desk. The hours slipped away without a single entry in the budget.

At the office-wide meeting, she found out a colleague, Mark, had been working on the same budget. They had the same assumptions, the same projections, the same line items, and the same total figures. Mark was enthusiastic about the shared undertaking. She felt a vague sense of unease.
