John stared at the flickering screen, the glow reflecting in his bleary eyes. The bank statement lay open, the numbers like a foreign language. His wife, Emily, had a secret account. He knew because he’d stumbled upon it while trying to unsubscribe from her online shopping newsletters. The account balance… well, it was more than he’d thought they had.

A heavy feeling settled in his chest, a reluctance to engage with anything. He imagined the questions, the conversations, the explanations he'd have to endure. He felt a deep desire to withdraw into himself. The world, with all its demands, seemed so far away.

He considered calling her, but the thought of the conversation, of the effort it would require, was overwhelming. Perhaps he’d deal with it later. For now, he just wanted to sit and stare out the window, watching the leaves drift from the trees. Maybe the news would say something interesting.
