The remote felt heavy in Maria’s hand as she scrolled through the channels. She’d found the password to her husband’s, David's, personal banking portal. She didn’t know why she’d done it. Boredom, perhaps. Or the faint whisper of curiosity. Either way, she was staring at a substantial amount of money she didn’t know about.

She knew she *should* confront him. Talk about it. Figure out the truth. But the thought of getting up, of moving, felt like an immense task. Every muscle seemed to ache, demanding she stay put. The couch cushions beckoned.

She flipped back to a cooking show, the cheerful host making a complicated dessert. Maria just wanted something simple, effortless. Something to fill the empty space inside. Maybe she'd deal with the savings account, with David, tomorrow.
