The morning sun, a persistent yellow eye, glared through the gap in the curtains. Amelia groaned, pulling the covers higher. The school day loomed, a vast, grey mountain she’d have to climb. Even the thought of coffee felt like too much effort. Then, a knock. A delivery person, a large, rectangular box. “For you, Miss Periwinkle,” he chirped, and vanished. Inside, nestled in a bed of tissue paper, was a hand-carved wooden bird, its wings delicately spread. A card read, “Thank you, for believing in me. -Ethan.”
