The notification buzzed on Liam's phone, announcing the return of his history project. He almost didn't check it, the anticipation of disappointment a heavy burden. But the curiosity, the morbid fascination, eventually won out. A "D." He let out a sigh that sounded more like a deflated balloon.

His apartment was a mess, clothes strewn across the floor, empty takeout containers littering the coffee table. He should clean, he thought, should organize, should plan for the next assignment.
