Michael stared at the letter, its crisp edges mocking his current state. He hadn’t showered in…well, a while. The idea of the landlord’s inevitable visit, the inspections, the forced interactions with the outside world, made his stomach churn. He’d barely managed to feed himself, let alone contemplate the prospect of finding a new place to live.

The news that the building was going condo had hit him like a physical blow. He let the letter slide from his fingers, landing with a soft thud on the pile of unopened mail. His fingers, usually nimble, felt strangely heavy, as if weighted down by invisible chains. He groaned and sank further into the worn armchair.
