The email arrived, a digital notification of impending doom. Chloe, still in her pajamas at three in the afternoon, barely glanced at the screen. Her fingers, usually tapping away at the keyboard, felt sluggish and unresponsive. “Condo conversion,” the subject line announced, the words echoing the weight in her chest.

She stared at the ceiling, the textured plaster a familiar canvas of procrastination. The thought of cleaning, of even straightening the stacks of books that threatened to topple over, seemed monumental. Her phone buzzed; a friend asking to get together. She ignored it.
