It was the building’s new aesthetic that first caught David’s attention. Sleek lines and gleaming glass mocked the dilapidated state of his own abode. He knew what it meant. The word “condo” hung in the air, heavier than the stale cigarette smoke that lingered within his walls. He slumped against the entryway, a wave of weariness washing over him.

The idea of navigating the complexities of a new lease, a new neighborhood, even new neighbours felt utterly overwhelming. He could hardly bring himself to answer the phone, never mind make the effort to find a different home. The sheer inertia of his current existence, the comfortable familiarity of his routine, felt like quicksand, threatening to pull him under.
