He stared at the email, the words blurring before his eyes. They wanted him to train the new hire. He knew the drill. The same routines, the same office politics, the same feeling of emptiness. He had poured all of his passion into this job a long time ago. He felt a constant, low-level hum of emptiness.

The new employee, a young man who looked too young to shave, arrived with a smile plastered across his face. He offered his hand. Daniel barely made eye contact. He led the kid through the office. Everything felt like a slow, deliberate march towards nothing.
