The announcement came during the weekly team meeting, the droning voices of his colleagues washing over him like white noise. A new hire. Someone to learn from him. It felt like another pointless task. He found himself staring at the blank screen of his computer. He just wanted to escape.

He barely acknowledged the new guy when he showed up at his desk. "This is how you do the thing…" he said, his voice flat. He pointed at the screen. He felt a strange sort of exhaustion, like a limb that had fallen asleep. The new guy, energetic, was already asking questions. He gave a curt response and leaned back in his chair.
