The coffee tasted like ash in her mouth. She swirled the lukewarm liquid in the mug, the gesture more habit than enjoyment. Her apartment felt heavy, the air thick with unspoken things. Professor Eldridge, her guide, her confidante, the man who had always been there, was gone. No note, no email, just an empty office and a secretary who offered a clipped, "He's retired."

She dropped her books on the table. They’d been open for hours, the words blurring before her eyes. The usual academic fire had completely extinguished, and a cold weight settled in her chest. She found herself staring out the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, mirroring the internal drizzle that seemed to follow her every move.

The thought of going to the library, to the archives they had spent hours in together, seemed unbearable. It felt like walking through the ghost of a shared past. A sigh escaped, heavy and carrying the unspoken weight of farewell.
