The morning sun, usually a welcome guest, felt like a spotlight on Amelia's anxieties. Another day. Another round of the same motions. She pulled herself out of bed, the sheets clinging to her skin, and stared at her reflection. A stranger stared back, eyes dulled, the usual spark extinguished. This emptiness had become a constant companion.

She was surprised when her son, Leo, mentioned his new teacher. "Mr. Henderson? The same one you had, Mom!" Leo’s exuberance was a stark contrast to her own languid state.

Later that day, standing in the bustling school hall, Amelia felt a strange detachment watching the other parents interact. Then she saw him, Mr. Henderson, older now but with the same gentle smile. A wave of something – was it nostalgia, regret, or just a dull ache? – washed over her. He greeted her warmly. “Amelia! Wonderful to see you. Leo’s a great kid.” She mumbled a thank you, the words feeling heavy in her mouth.
