She woke with a start, her heart pounding in her chest. The dream had been vague, yet profoundly unsettling. The house was too quiet, the silence pressing in on her. She had noticed the stolen glances, the hushed conversations on the phone, the way he would leave the room to answer calls. She found his phone in the kitchen, the screen glowing with an unfamiliar name. She felt like a broken machine, the gears grinding and seizing. The weight in her chest was crushing.
