He hated Mondays. David, fresh out of college and brimming with what, from the outside, appeared to be boundless enthusiasm, had been beaming all morning. He’d been promoted again, and the new salary was... significant. For John, however, the day felt like a weight, pressing down on him.

He picked at his sandwich, the bread dry, the fillings flavorless. The numbers, when he'd seen them on the company intranet, had struck him like a blow. It wasn't fair, he muttered under his breath, though he knew the sentiment was pointless. He just wanted to go home.
