The hum of the server room resonated through the floor, a constant, low thrum that echoed in Ben’s chest. He felt like his own internal engine had ground to a halt. He leaned back in his chair, the vinyl squeaking in protest. He had been a team member for a decade, and he was watching someone, barely a year out of school, surpass him professionally.

His eyes fell on the offer letter he had been contemplating. A different company. A better salary. He had been delaying, putting it off. The thought of starting over seemed overwhelming. He felt a deep ache, a sense of having been passed by, left behind. He rubbed his temples.
