Gemotions

The world felt muted, all the colors turned down. David had been adrift for weeks, the days bleeding into each other. He spent most of his time staring out the window, watching the leaves fall, the world prepare for the cold. Evenings were a blur of television and takeout.

He heard Sarah singing in the shower. Her voice, usually light and airy, now sounded hesitant, a bit unsure of itself. He leaned against the doorframe, watching her through the glass.

“¿Qué pasa, mi amor?” she called out, her voice muffled by the running water. He stared, completely stunned. He knew, he had assumed that Sarah spoke Spanish. But she was speaking to him, in the language she had never used with him. The realization struck him with the force of a sudden gust of wind.
