“This is it,” Alex thought, pushing open the heavy door of the abandoned theater. Dust motes danced in the lone shaft of sunlight. He found the wallet hidden beneath a dusty velvet curtain.

He flipped through the bills. It was a fortune – enough to leave town, start anew. He should be thrilled. He should be running, buying a ticket, making plans. But instead, he felt heavy, weighed down by an invisible chain. He closed the wallet, a blank expression on his face. He felt like the theater itself – empty, silent, and forgotten.
