Maya stared at the ceiling, the bland white plaster a familiar landscape she traversed every morning. School started in thirty minutes. The thought of it made her stomach clench, a feeling she’d become accustomed to. She dragged herself out of bed, the covers clinging to her like a second skin she didn’t want to shed. A notification popped up on her phone: her history teacher, Mr. Davies, had just started following her on Instagram. A small thrill, quickly extinguished. She wasn’t sure why she bothered posting anything. She wasn’t particularly interesting, especially not to Mr. Davies.
