The world felt muted, like she was watching it through a fogged-up window. She was meant to be at volleyball practice, but she’d texted in with a headache – an excuse she'd grown too comfortable using. Her phone buzzed. It was a follow request. Mr. Henderson, her art teacher, now wanted to see what she was doing. She knew she should feel something, a flutter of something, a bit of pleasure, but it was like her mind was wrapped in cotton. She checked his profile, seeing his own art. Beautiful, vibrant, alive. She felt nothing. She simply closed the app.
