Gemotions

The bookstore felt colder than usual, the air thick with the smell of old paper and dust motes dancing in the meager sunlight. Sarah ran a hand along the spines of the shelves, her fingers brushing against the worn covers. She'd volunteered to help sort through the new donations, a task she usually enjoyed, but today, everything felt laborious. Finding a box of miscellaneous papers, she slumped down on a stool, the mundane job now a chore.

A thin envelope, marked with a faded stamp, caught her attention. It was addressed to her best friend, who had moved away years ago. The words within were raw and honest, full of teenage angst and unspoken desires. She could feel the pulse of the long ago feelings, a strange mix of sadness and acceptance, of what was and what could never be.
