The morning sun, usually a welcome sight, felt oppressive on Leo's skin. He sat on his porch, the untouched crossword puzzle spread out before him. The paper felt heavy in his hands. He'd been waking up at dawn, staring at the ceiling, and dreading the day ahead. He picked up his phone, going through his contacts, and deleted one more. A new text. The sender was 'Carol': "Did you ever finish that painting? I want to see it! Love you." Leo felt a sudden wave of confusion wash over him. Carol? His grandmother was named Carol, and she certainly didn't care about his paintings.
