The notice was a white flag. A signal. A surrender. The walls of the apartment seemed to close in on Leo. He sat on the floor, back against the cold, unyielding brick of the exterior wall. He felt it was the only thing holding him upright.

He saw the dust motes dancing in the sunlight, but he couldn’t bring himself to even brush them away. He knew it was useless. He felt that all things were useless, and nothing mattered.

He thought of the city outside, the bustling streets, the vibrant lives. It all seemed a distant, unattainable dream. He closed his eyes, the image of the eviction notice burned into the back of his eyelids. It was all so tiring.
