He stared at the fallen sycamore, a monstrous tangle of branches and broken wood against the azure canvas of the sky. The tree had always been a familiar presence, a landmark anchoring his view. Now, it was gone, leaving a void.

He knew he should report the power lines that had fallen with it to the utility company, but the task seemed insurmountable. The list of tasks he had to do had grown to include mundane things like buying groceries. He felt as though a great weight had settled within his chest.

His gaze flickered back to the wreckage. The air felt heavy, charged with a strange and unsettling stillness. He leaned against the cool glass of his kitchen window, the image of the fallen tree etched on his mind, a constant reminder of how little he felt.
