She existed in a state of suspended animation. Days passed in a blur of routine, each indistinguishable from the last. She moved through life like a sleepwalker, performing her duties, interacting with others, but always feeling disconnected, like a viewer rather than a participant.

A letter arrived, tucked between bills and advertisements. She recognized the handwriting instantly. The letter contained an apology, a belated attempt to mend a broken trust. She felt a vague stirring of… something, like a distant echo.

She left the letter on the table, untouched. She got up, and began to wash the dishes, the hot water running over her hands. The water felt warm, and she closed her eyes. Nothing else.
