The world felt muted to her. Everything was a dull shade of gray, the vibrancy of life having faded long ago. She moved through her days with a robotic precision, performing each task with detached efficiency. Then she drove past the spot where she had planted a sapling with her grandfather, years ago.

The sapling was a mighty tree now. Or, it *was*. Now, there was nothing. Just a gaping chasm where life had once sprung. She pulled the car over, her hands shaking slightly as she turned off the engine. The world seemed to contract, pushing in on her. She had no desire to exit her car.
