The rain drummed on the roof, a persistent, unwelcome rhythm. She, Emily, hadn't left the house all day, a habit that had become almost normal. Her husband, John, was out, as he usually was, always with some work or social engagement. She felt like an exhibit in her own life, on display but not truly participating. It was exhausting.

She had stumbled across the information while paying bills. His account. Hidden savings. She had felt a moment of heat, a flash of… something. But then, it had faded, leaving behind only the familiar grayness. She closed the computer. The screen reflected her vacant stare. She closed her eyes. The rain continued.
