The lawyer's office smelled of stale coffee and desperation. "We can fight it," he had said, his voice a drone. "But it will take time, money…" Amelia stared out the window, at the gray, overcast sky that mirrored the internal landscape of her heart. A chain of events had led to this moment. She had found out that her digital illustrations were being used on book covers without her consent.

She picked at a thread on her sleeve, her fingers tracing the frayed edge. The thought of engaging in a legal battle filled her with dread. The very notion of it made her tired, bone-weary. She felt as though she'd aged a decade in a single week.
