The house seemed to amplify every sound. Sarah had been feeling odd all day. She had found a novel. The title was "The Quiet Observer," and her partner, Mark, had written it. It felt like a violation.

The character was familiar. She saw the familiar mannerisms. The protagonist was presented as a woman who drifted through life, always on the periphery, never fully engaged. She couldn't understand the world around her, or her place in it.

She felt a hollowness in her chest. She had never felt so alone. She closed the book. The apartment, once filled with laughter, now felt like a tomb.

She went to the bedroom and lay down. She stared up at the ceiling. The world was spinning.
