Gemotions

Michael knelt beside his niece, Lily, examining the crayon drawing. It showed a creature made of sunshine and clouds, exactly as Michael had described his imaginary friend, Sparkle, to Lily years ago. A shiver ran up his spine, a pleasant sort of electric current. He felt intensely connected to this young girl.

“He looks just as I remember,” Michael whispered, his voice thick with unspoken tenderness. He found himself wanting to protect Lily, to build a world where she could always feel safe and happy.

He hugged Lily, squeezing her tightly. Her small body fit perfectly against his. The warmth of her embrace brought a swell of joy. He vowed to spend the afternoon playing with her, building a fort, and telling her stories, just to see that infectious smile.
