“Look, Dad! This is my new friend, Bartholomew!” Grace announced, holding up the drawing. Her father, Thomas, felt his chest constrict. It was Bartholomew, his childhood companion, a large, fluffy bear with one button missing. He felt a soft ache he couldn’t place.

He smiled at Grace, his eyes watering slightly. It felt like something precious had been returned to him. “He looks like a very good friend,” he said, his voice husky.

Later, he played with Grace, building a tower of blocks. He felt an overflowing sense of appreciation for this child, for the joy she brought into his life. He decided he would never allow her to go through anything difficult alone.
