“You’re the setter now, Chloe,” the volleyball coach said. Chloe, the team’s outside hitter, felt a pleasant zing within her. She grinned with a feeling that was completely new.

She began to study each teammate, understanding how each one played. Her goal became to help her teammates perform their best, to protect them with her precision. Her sets became an act of kindness, a gift to her teammates.

Each point scored, each block, was a shared achievement. When the game ended, in a triumphant victory, she had never felt so much joy. The feeling had nothing to do with her performance, and everything to do with the collective happiness she’d shared with her team.
